What we'll explore in this course!

Session 1: Introducing the Subject

In our first class together, we'll talk about the importance of choosing your subject. We'll explore framing and cropping, removing distractions and placement of your subject. These are all important compositional tools to learn in photography.

Session 2: Working with Lines and Shapes

How can we use lines and shapes to guide our viewer's eye throughout our image? We'll talk about this and play around with how lines and shapes can add feeling to our images. And why not dive into compositional tools like pattern and texture, too?

Session 3: Creating Depth in a Photograph

This class is about capturing 3-dimensional reality in a 2-dimensional photograph. We'll talk about foreground, midground and backgrounds and different compositional techniques that can add depth to our photographs.

Session 4: Creating Balance in a Photograph

Balancing our image with different elements or negative space is an important part of creating a great picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much time will be spent online during this course?

Each session is approximately 90 minutes. Throughout our four sessions together, we will discuss and practice various compositional techniques used in photography. You will have lots of time to practice, experiment and play with the concepts learned .. .and take lots of photographs ... in between sessions.

We will also have some fun games brought into our time together to get kids moving, learning and laughing!

2. What kind of camera does my child require to take this course?

It is not necessary to have a DSLR for this course. As the course is compositionally based they can use phone cameras, point and shoots or DSLR cameras.

3. What is the ideal age for kids taking this course?

Kids will need to be comfortable with being in a Zoom meeting for 60-70 minutes. An age range of 9-16 is recommended for this camp but of course depends on their focus level.

4. How will the kids learn in this online photo course?

For each day we are together kids will be taken through a few different compositional concepts that you see in the course schedule. They will see loads of different examples that are shown through screen share that reinforce their learning. I keep the sessions interactive by asking them what they notice (one of my favourite questions!!), ensuring they understand the concept and encouraging questions.

After our time together, the kids have the week to learn, play and experiment with what they learned. They will have a number of challenges to complete before the next class. They are welcome to email me with questions they may run into throughout the week. They will also have online access to the material covered in class so they can go back and review whenever they need. They are also welcome to post their images to the KPA Community Hub to get feedback.

Submitted images will be discussed in the following week's class.

5. Are there are prerequisites for taking this course?
